You're flying to oblivion? Ask Eddie...
There are some uncomfortable truths to be highlighted. The accident in the States with a helicopter flying into a descending aeroplane carrying over 60 people is a case in point. Just have a look at Flightradar24 to see how many aircraft are in the air at any given moment. Apparently 100,000 every day, every hour. Imagine the stresses on flight-crew and more so air traffic controllers. Perhaps it is time to have a real chat about the impact on everything caused by the air travel industry. There are signs that in the States people are using air travel like we do bus trips here. ‘Oh darling, just popping out for a Chinese, be back in an hour or so’. Perhaps a bit too flippant but it has been said by a few people. It is also why I am also convinced we will not deal, we cannot possible deal with climate change with this going on. Besides leaving the political side such as off the cuff marks by a certain president, it is surely time to start thinking about what humanity is actually doing. It’s OK for our Mr Miliband to burble on about ‘Net-Zero’ but he simply doesn’t have a clue. I will put here some average statistics – there are 100grams of CO2 per passenger per kilometre equating to 90 kgs of CO2 per passenger per hour of flight. Work that one out Mr Miliband! 100,000 planes in the sky at any moment with average flight duration about 5 hours and 200 passenger per plane. In the end we will get some idea about why CO2 is increasing so fast and by so much! These are the problems now facing the air travel industry and indeed, all of us. Accidents and desecration of our atmosphere. Looking at such numbers it is actually incredible not more accidents are happening but they can and will, it is inevitable. Someone has already said AI will be helping, well for myself I will not put my money on AI. Those in power do seem to think it will be the answer to all our present problems. It could well be the ‘Nightmare on Elm Street‘ to use a title of one of those quickie horror film names. To use words coined by Isaac Asimov, has anyone worked out the rules yet? If you are concerned have a look at his robotic laws or read ‘Artificial Intelligence: Ethics & Societal Challenges’, from Lund University.
The undeniable truth is everything we do has consequences. You let the air travel industry go to do their own thing and eventually the results of that become apparent. I do not really need to highlight the results, anyone with some ‘spunk’ can figure it out. Perhaps that is also a problem, not many want to know the inevitable results of their actions and decisions. We appear to be more interested in how to get to Spain or another ‘sunny’ country. Like most politicians do, they walk away or deny responsibility. The frank truth is, yes there is a atmospheric problem. It is heating up. The major reason is the vastly increasing amount of CO2 and also methane plus maybe a few more gases us, humanity are pouring out every second of every day. But we have elected politicians who say they will do something about the problem, like Ed Miliband but who tackle it by just increasing the amount of generating electricity. Forgetting, that alone does not reduce the CO2, it actually increases it! Work out why!
