Get working politicians - No2

Carrying on from a previous post concerning the state of politics, the real state and not just what our wonderful government tells us, it needs mentioning the state of it gets worse day by day. In Russia we get high placed individuals openly declaring ‘nuking’ Europe is a real possibility. Even just saying one capital needs to be ‘nuked’ as a lesson to who is boss. In America (the US) its president simply declares Europe is basically a non-entity and not worthy to be defended. The truth is harsh because parts of it are correct. On the news channels a former head of the Army said in 2024 the UK should train a ‘Citizen Army’. That idea was simply laughed at by No.10. Yet other European countries now are installing forms of military service. Simply because it is getting into our heads that numbers still matter viewing what is happening in Ukraine. Sir Ben Wallace, a previous Defence Secretary said “The reality is our armed forces cannot survive on a diet of government spin, over-the-horizon spending commitments and hollow rhetoric”. Spot on Ben! Yet the present Labour wonder in the post just mumbled “This characterisation is baseless”. Is it really John? Again these people proudly walk back and fore holding placards showing words like “We increased defence spending blah blah, we have a £20billion black blah blah, we signed 1,000 contracts blah blah and so on and on. Just as Ben said – hollow rhetoric. The reality on the ground is we have no army to mention, we cannot fight a war for longer than five minutes or so. The real situation would be very much as written, Russia will almost certainly try to destroy our communications, not just the UK but European. Also possibly including the US. The US can no longer be depended upon, perhaps a view slowly being understood by everyone except our politicians.

People like Rutte for instance trying to portray himself as a ‘Dear friend’. Let’s call a turd a turd and not a rose – it is not just Trump who says Europe is lost, there are a host of cronies saying and believing the same thing. So, Europe has no real options as Sir Ben indicated. Either you stand on the ramparts or the enemy will simply bury you. I know it is a stark view and I too rather live in peace. But the simple adage is if you want to live in peace make sure you carry a weapon. One of the problems within Europe is despite the EU, its countries are not singing from the same hymn sheet. Politics are still divisive. Hungary is close to being an autocratic state and it’s not on it’s own either. There are disparate armies, mostly professional and therefore weak because of possible problems when casualties occur. Simple logistics would break down quickly because replenishments would be random or not available. This is why the idea of an European army would certainly be of value , again torpedoed by our clever politicians. Truth is it would be difficult because of identity problems, language and the inevitable infighting as to who would be boss. So, plenty to think about Starmer but you better get on with it. The Russians are still moving!
