Where is the spirituality today?

As a former Reader in the Church in Wales (Eglwys yng Nghymru) I am aghast at the decline. I suppose there are reasons, probably the general decline in public standards, the voracious Internet and morally defunct social media, just to name a few. But we cannot dismiss the standards themselves within the Church. When I say Church here I mean the Anglican Church. From the problems commenced with the continuing attempt to accept gay marriage, to the belief that rock music will save the day and everything in between. The funny thing is that all of that has set myself thinking about what religion, what faith is all about. For instance, I have begun to see the many discrepancies within the Bible. Not a real problem obviously as the Bible is basically a great story of how a people became used to the idea of a single God. But the underlying message is a very powerful one. It is about spiritual strength. The truth is that I have never believed, along with quite a number of others about the Bible’s infallibility. But I do know spirituality of the person is important.

Coupled with that is the continuing degradation of the West. Reading an article about Melanie Phillips who boldly declared – The West stands on the brink of Destruction – she says the Judeo-Christian faith who built the West are the only ones that can save it. Meaning the Christian Catholic streams of Faith being at the foreground. Not Islamism or the Islam faith, not commercialism. Whilst many would totally disagree with such views, I have some sympathy with them. In fact looking at our own country, the UK who would disagree with the view that people with totally different outlooks, faiths and opinions have changed and are still doing so or trying to do so, our country? More so are doing so violently. We may well ask what the rationale of all of it is and what the underlying political thoughts are. A question no politician wants to answer. But that it is changing the country’s whole basis is undeniably true. Hence I think forming part of the basic argument postulated by Melanie Phillips.

Again talking about who and how all this is happening, just look at the performance of our various western governments. All the leaders say virtually the same things and all are failing. If Churchill were alive today, the saying ‘Lions led by donkeys’ would be on his lips although he did not coin the saying, it is pretty correct. Even so called ‘strong’ men like Trump, all we have heard is loads of talk and very little action. It remains to be seen whether he can fulfill all his promises. As is indeed with our own Starmer. It is all part of our slow but certain demise. I heard it reported once that Putin believes the West is destructing itself. He might well be correct. He might have, like me, read Melanie's thoughts.
