Politicians are good or...bad?

It was reported a day or so ago that some Senedd (the Welsh government) members felt that social media is used to viciously attack politicians. Even on a daily base. In other words, continuously. Good Lord, a politician complaining about being attacked? That is unheard of, never happened before. What is going on? Where is the Army, can we send the Royal Marines? Well, Trumpy baby can in the US, why not here? We must safeguard our valued politicians, they do such a valued good job it must be protected at all costs. Yes, yes!

Well, it makes you wonder what type of politician we have today. Obviously they do not like it up ‘m, although they do not mind putting the hot poker up others. Miss Rayner didn’t mind calling the other side ‘scum’. There again Welsh politicians, at least some of them, are a different breed, coming from the inner regions where you see no-one for years the only thing they know about is sheep. Sheep listen, say nothing, and are easy to herd. So the poor dabs are not really used to some internecine wording.

Having said all that I also am not slow in saying something negative about politicians and politics, especially about the quality of decision making, the quality of policies, the quality of politicians. It is true though to say thanks to social media things have become more vitriolic. Simply because it is easy. One talks to a computer, and that animal does not talk back. So I can call David Lammy an idiot and there are no come-backs unless he reads it and takes offence. Now, I am sure the good David is not an idiot, far from it but nevertheless a heck of a lot of people do not particularly agree with his brand of politics or his way of handling sensitive issues as Foreign Secretary. Nor for that matter with the PM’s handling of the EU question. Not even poor Rachel’s handling of the economy of which she is an self-taught expert.

The problem with politicians is that they have forgotten that social media have brought people generally much closer to the issues than they were in Victorian times. We can see the failures even before they happen! The issues are discussed ad infinitum before decisions are made and the results will be known within hours! Hence politicians are held to account, vilified, for results everybody now experiences for good or mostly bad.

So my advice to budding politicians is this, either never open mouth and just pick up the money (just like some 90% of Westminster MP’s) or become as aggressive as a pitbull and don’t go on social media. Take the OU course hosted by Angela Rayner and learn how to be friendly to opponents.
