Anyone heard about "String Theory"?

As I am rather interested in the Universe and what makes it tick, I came across the ‘String Theory’. A Physics theory that came about around the Seventies. Basically saying that String theory provides a theoretical framework in which all particles, from photons to quarks, are one-dimensional strings as opposed to zero-dimensional points. If a version of string theory were found that held up in all contexts, it would serve as a single mathematical model for describing the nature of the universe—a “theory of everything” that would replace the Standard Model of physics, which does not explain gravity. (from a Masterclass.com article)”. The Encyclopedia Britannica says “String theory, in particle physics, a theory that attempts to merge quantum mechanics with Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity”. Succinctly put I suppose but to the common man it means absolutely nothing.

From my point of view, I see the Universe. On a clear night I still see a multitude of stars as I live in a part of the country with little light pollution. And yes, I do think about how it is all made up. How it all just seemingly floats in an enormous void serenely and sometimes violently. I am aware that what I see is not quite how it is! It is all made of much smaller things. Atoms, quarks and even smaller perhaps. This is where ‘string theory’ comes in. Trying to make sense of the quantum expanse. It makes me think that perhaps there is a basic force or particle if you will, that makes up everything. Something of which you can say you cannot go further down the ladder. You are at the absolute bottom. So, quantum physics is the study of matter and energy at its primary level. But when we dive into all the chatter on the Web it becomes quite discernible early on that there is no quantifiable theory to anything. Meaning they have found quarks, they observed gluons. One will hear about leptons and prions but frankly it could be just fanciful thinking. The question that has been posed is - Is there a bottom somewhere? Indeed, the fundamental question.

There have been many scientists postulating answers but missing proof so far has put things into the realm of where the emperor’s clothes are stored. But it is fun. For myself, at least for now, I think that quarks may well be the bottom of the pile. It is now believed that in fact the elementary ‘particles’, the quark and the electron are in fact vibrations in the quantum field that permeates all of space. The string theory? Rather interesting. Everything seems to be about size. What about – what happens when we go the other way? That our so-called universe is actually a quark or an electron in a much greater expanse. If space is without borders and goes on forever, everything exists and will be forever. It is difficult to accept it as we know we will ‘die’ one day and also we assume everything will ‘die’ one day but in fact as a thinking being we will cease to exist but our constituent atoms will ‘live’ on.

I have said before I am no scientist, but I can think, so I am. Based on Descartes. Great guy.
