Is NATO dead? Well, ask Trump...

Now that the (in)famous US election has been done and dusted, us here in Europe, and I classify the UK as still part of Europe although not aligned with its economics part, the EU trading bloc, Europe as a whole needs to seriously think over Trump’s words about NATO. As we already know it was mentioned he had reservations about the payments as agreed by constituent members not being met. Yes, also including the UK! 2.5% of GDP but most except the US itself failed to do so. So, what now? Are we seeing the collapse of NATO? It could well be but not just yet. It has been talked about Russia spending billions for subverting NATO. Indeed subverting western ideas, western politics, including elections. We need to seriously think about how to combat that! For myself I have been of the opinion that a standing European Army is a must. Despite the UK not being part of the decision making process out of Brussels we need to be part of it. The time has gone long past that the UK can stand on its own. There is little point in dreaming about past glories. That world has gone and now we are all faced with completely new adversaries who are using methods like drones, are using terror organisations and have already infiltrated the very fabric of the European countries themselves. Remember the Skripals. Remember the infiltration of the electoral process of the US and possibly also in other countries. Now that President Trump is wielding the sceptre, we should be careful not to be hit by it. Trump might be the choice of the people of the United States but even so I wonder whether they realise that the US also needs allies and would find it incredibly costly and tiresome to stand completely alone. But if that is their collective wish, so be it. Simply put Europe needs to put aside historical differences, we are literally all in the same boat. If we sink, we’d better learn Russian, if we are still alive!

The US will have enough on its plate, even if NATO survives, in the Pacific. It might have escaped the notice of the people but the Chinese are definitely trying to subvert the interests of the US in that region. The money needed for that effort will outstrip even the US Federal Bank and also diminish the US input into European bases. Hence, Europe will have to pull its socks up. I believe the UK, France and Germany must start the ball rolling. It will also be very necessary to leave out Turkey since today that country can no longer be relied upon. We also need to bring in Switzerland and Austria and lastly ignore everybody else and install Ukraine immediately. Or when the war there has been concluded.

Am I talking a world war here? Possibly but in any case I rather live a free life (well, as free as it can be) than as a serf in a labour camp mining diamonds and gold for super rich political elites.
