Democracy? What's it about then?
Perhaps we, in the so-named, democratic world have failed to notice a worrying trend within society? For a start we have eminently educated legal people declaring that an elected prime minister of a democratic country is a criminal. This together with one of his ministers. As some journalists have written, we seem to have forgotten how all this started. Then we have diplomats of the European Union actually agreeing and even the British Prime Minister refuses to condemn this deplorable ICC decision. It seems that somehow we agree with the actions of terrorists and actions of authoritarian states. What is going on, we have to ask. Are we hell-bent on establishing a totalitarian state? Do we really understand what is at stake? In Romania already a person with Russian sympathies is the front-runner for the presidency. It escapes people’s perception that it does not take a lot to change a political system! It does not take a lot to descend into the abyss!
Remember the way how Hitler in Germany came to power. The deprivation after the First World War and the financial breakdown of the early thirties caused people to look for apparent strong leaders promising work and a better life. It seems just so easy to get into this frame of mind. In Britain today there are also rumblings, the politicians also here have started to believe they are the only ones who know what to do and how to lead the people. It also smells of a totalitarian approach. Us, citizens, must keep the mouth shut, pay the exorbitant costs of the state and die quietly. If history has anything to show us, it is the way to dictatorship. We should take care to educate our political class in the democratic principles of freedom and choice. All within constrains of what is available and possible.
Especially as journalists across the western world have noted the political statements coming out of the Russian Federation. ‘Putin believes he’s changing the world order.’ In recent months, Putin decided there no longer will be “the West”. Putin intends to destroy it — he actually believes that the West will self-destruct. Frankly, from where I am sitting he could well be right!
It should be obvious by now that our politicians, within a democratic system are no longer aware of the basic principles. Sometimes are not even cognisant of the established laws of the country they are supposed to serve. Too many are basically in it for themselves. This shows up in the cavalier management and use of expenses. It seems therefore that our checking systems, our validation processes leave quite a bit to chance. The other word that is becoming heard is ‘corruption’. We should all remember this adage – ‘Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely’. Or if you will ‘Money corrupts, too much money corrupts absolutely’. Are we listening Westminster wallahs?
