Some fun on the LInes...

It is a fun world, no? Most of us now know that the impending shutdown of the copper based telephone system will be switched off by 2025 which is just short of two years. Lovely. In the Welsh valleys and indeed in Wales a lot of homeowners, too many in fact, are not even on a broadband service and as such are dependent on their copper phone line cables. Others with a broadband service are told they would need at least a FTTC service. FTTC – Fibre to the Cabinet. Or even if available FTTP – Fibre to the Premises. Obviously costing more – oh yes, you would not expect the companies to lose an opportunity, would you now? So, I decided to have a nosy around and see what is going on. I found it is relatively easy with a good router that has VoIP capability or purchasing a DECT phone (A Base plus one or two handsets or even more) it is just a few hours to set up (if you know what you’re doing and have the right instructions!), I bought the Grandstream DP750 with two DP720 handsets. Total cost just over £100.00 , next a subscription to a VoIP service provider who supplied a line for £1.00 per month. If you have to use two handsets or more, each will need a line.

The data input for it to work can be a bit difficult, I am no clown as far as computers and peripheral equipment is concerned but after prodding and prompting the service provider who incidentally was very poor on the written setup instructions, came up with the right stuff which then took 5 minutes to type in and bingo! It all sprung to life. The service provider does have a website but it obviously does not supply instructions to setup equipment. Simply because there are already many different types! I understand that but as Grandstream is a big supplier you might have expected a much better setup instruction set than the very small booklets that are supplied with the equipment. In fact except for switching the stuff on, the booklets are virtually useless. Again I am told that they cannot do this because as alike the equipment there are hundreds of different service providers, all with their own rules and regulations insofar use is concerned.

I think it is time that a government agency will be set up, particularly because by 2025 we will all be in the same boat. Guess what will happen? Correct, information lines will be flooded with anxious homeowners all asking for help. However, I heard that what also will be available are adapters which you will use with your router, VoIP capable or not which allows your PBX phone system (copperline based) to use the Internet. Obviously, you will have to buy a router or have it available. Also you will be dependent on BT, not the cheapest on the block! There might be some competition but that is not clear yet. In the meantime my own setup is already working and soon I will transfer to a company that allows a broadband line without phonecalls (over the copper lines). Then I will also be able to port the number I have been used to for a number of years.
