To be AI or not to be AI? That's the question...
The question of what AI will mean for humanity, is one that has no answer. At least not yet. This morning one learns the American supremos have limited access to one of the newest promotions, I think it is called Mythos or something like that. Is someone waking up to the dangers AI actually poses? The way development is going seems great until someone starts thinking – ‘What if this falls in the wrong hands?’ And quite obviously, looking at past human endeavours, developments ALWAYS fall into the wrong hands. It is inevitable. Either they just copy stuff, the Chinese and Japanese were very good at it. The Russians reverse engineered a Super Rolls Royce jet engine thanks to some woolly British politician thinking he was a humanitarian. So, AI will be in the hands who think banking is just for them. The question then is a simple one, how do you combat something like AI? Because in the end that is how it will be. Isaac Asimov wrote about it, years ago but today it is necessary to point back at it and take note. Anther question is – Why develop robots to play football? Is this needed? If someone said to me they are going to develop 100% secure operating robots. Brain surgery, heart implants, and those sort of things then yes, great stuff. Although I always shiver when someone says, it is 100% secure, there is no such thing. AI like all things humans have developed and made, has two sides. Just call them, good and bad. Good in that it can help us to put this planet right. Atmosphere included. Also, finally sort out the discrepancies in economical well-being, a better sharing of life’s necessities and that’s just for starters. But we are already noticing an upsurge in AI being used in scams, financial in particular. If not halted this will ensure the collapse of the present financial systems. Again, people have used AI for bad. It won’t stop so the good will either have to get used to it or fight it. This has been the way for centuries.
Can there be safeguards – yes there can be. AI can be developed with safeguards but still there are no guarantees that AI itself could be used to circumvent these. So, is it that we have opened Pandora’s Box? It seems so. Most of us know what that means, we have started something that we can no longer control. We have developed some process that can gallop away on its own. How will that process, its ability to control, impinge on humanity? I believe in the end, we might have to destroy it. But only if we could. Where will de great data centres be, underground? How will they be powered? I should imagine it will have to be the Sun. Or will AI find a way to harness the Universe? Power systems we never new existed? Some scientists have already said ‘Intelligence and awareness, Consciousness’ do not need to be biological, i.e flesh based. Just read the story by Andy Weir, ‘Hail Mary’. Well, the final bit that needs to be said is this – Humans watch what you’re doing otherwise it might bite you in the bum!
